In Plaka, a must-see is Tripodon street. The “street of Tripods” is thought to be one of the oldest streets in Athens and even Europe. It retains the same name and has almost the same path as it did thousands of years ago. There Athenians used to walk to get to the famous drama festivals, as it connected the Dionysus theatre with the Prytaneio in the ancient agora. The name of the street is derived from the choragic monuments that were once lined along with it. The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates can still be seen on it.
You’ve been to the Acropolis, but have you been to Anafiotika? It’s a neighborhood created in the middle of the 19th century, and it’s one of the most charming areas of the city. After Liberation, craftsmen and builders came from Anafi, a tiny island near Santorini, to Athens. They came to Athens to build the palace for the first king of the Greeks, Otto. On the foot of the Acropolis, they built their homes resembling villages in Anafi: tiny whitewashed houses and narrow alleys. Anafiotika seems to be an oasis from the noise of the city.

If you are planning to get to Plaka from Athens Airport, you can ride the blue metro line. You will get on the metro at the Athens Airport Station and get off either at Syntagma Station or the Monastiraki Station. There is another option to change metro lines at the Syntagma Station, take the red line and get off at the Acropolis Station. The trip from the airport to Plaka is about 40 minutes to 1 hour. The metro of Athens operates 7 days a week from 6:30 am (the first departure from the Airport Station) to 11:30 pm (the last departure from the Airport Station).

The X95 ATHENS AIRPORT – SYNTAGMA SQUARE route connects Athens Airport to downtown, and the journey takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The final bus stop is at Syntagma Square. The bus service operates 24 hours and 7 days a week.

You can hire a taxi from the line at the airport, but there you should wait in a queue, sometimes in a very long queue, and be prepared to pay in cash.
